Abstract:Objective To evaluate the correlation of the levels of monokine induced by interferon-γ (MIG) and interferon-γ-inducible protein-10 (IP-10) with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). Methods A total of 164 patients were enrolled as subjects. Clinical and follow-up studies of baseline characteristics, IMT, and serum levels of MIG and IP-10 were performed among those patients. The relationship of serum levels of MIG and IP-10 with carotid IMT was analyzed. Results The maximum and mean values of IMT were 0.991±0.127 mm and 0.796±0.136 mm, respectively. The serum levels of MIG and IP-10 were positively correlated with carotid IMT. No significant correlation could be demonstrated of the serum levels of MIG or IP-10 with the changes in IMT during follow-up. After correction for confounding and drug factors, the serum level of MIG was independently correlated with carotid IMT (max-IMT:β=0.198, P=0.010; mean-IMT:β=0.186, P=0.017). Conclusions Serum MIG level is independently correlated with carotid IMT, suggesting that the serum Mig level probably has potential clinical significance in the early diagnosis of atherosclerosis.
